Giant Drop

Opening in December 1998, Dreamworld’s Giant Drop was designed by Intamin using the existing tower from Tower of Terror and is the only ride in the world to incorporate both attractions on one tower.

After slowly rising 39 storeys to the top, riders then accelerate at the speed of gravity for 5 seconds of weightless freefall before magnetic brakes stop the 8-person car’s decent. This deceleration delivers around 4 positive G’s after the gut-wrenching 9.814 metres per second drop.

On its opening in 1997, Giant Drop claimed three world firsts:

  • It was the tallest free fall ride in world
  • It was the first time the dual open-air 8-seater gondolas had been installed on a ride of this height
  • It was the first time a single tower had supported two different ride experiences. the other being Tower of Terror vehicle)

FAST FACTS

  • Speed: Up to 135 km/hour (84 miles/hour)
  • Height: 119 metres (39 storeys)
  • Acceleration: 9.814 metres per second (compounding)
  • Free Fall: Five seconds
  • Gravitational Forces: 4G’s
  • Cycle Time: 106 seconds
  • Capacity: 600-800 passengers per hour
  • Ride Vehicle: 2 x 8-seat horizontal gondolas on the eastern and western aspect of the Tower

  8. i was only 10 when i went on the ride, and my sister was 9. being up there, is the most scariest thing i ever did… just waiting to free fall, for the first time in my life, 39 stories. but it was worth it. and i went back to dreamworld again when i was 12. my sister chickened out but i didnt. :D

if you dont go on this, you’ll regret!

i also went on the tower of terror, but the giant drop was scarier!
